Study notes

How COUNTBLANK and COUNTA works

  • What does COUNTBLANK do?

COUNTBLANK counts the empty cells in a range: =COUNTBLANK(B2:B9).

  • How is it different from COUNTA?

COUNTA counts the cells that are filled in; COUNTBLANK counts the ones that aren't. Together they add up to the number of cells in the range.

  • What counts as blank?

A cell with nothing in it. A cell holding a space looks empty but isn't, so COUNTBLANK doesn't count it.
