How XLOOKUP works

  • What is XLOOKUP?

XLOOKUP is the modern replacement for VLOOKUP. Instead of a table and a column number, you give it two columns: where to search and what to return.

    =XLOOKUP(lookup_value, lookup_array, return_array)

  • What are the two columns?

    • lookup_array: the column to search, e.g. B2:B11.
    • return_array: the column with the answers, e.g. A2:A11.
  • Why is it better than VLOOKUP?

Because the two columns are separate, the answer can be to the left of the search column, something VLOOKUP can't do. XLOOKUP also matches exactly by default.
