How VLOOKUP works

  • What does VLOOKUP do?

VLOOKUP finds a value in the first column of a table, then returns a value from another column in the same row.

    =VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, FALSE)

  • What are its four parts?

    • lookup_value: what you are looking for, e.g. a product name.
    • table_array: the whole table, starting with the column you search.
    • col_index_num: which column of the table to return. The first column is 1.
    • FALSE: exact match.
  • Why add FALSE?

Leave it out and VLOOKUP guesses, which gives wrong answers on unsorted data.
