Study notes

How SUMIF works

  • What does SUMIF do?

SUMIF adds up only the rows that match something:

=SUMIF(where to look, what to match, what to add up)

  • How does SUMIF line up the numbers?

    =SUMIF(B2:B11,"North",C2:C11)

This looks for North in column B and adds up the sales next to each one in column C. The first and last ranges should cover the same rows, so each sale lines up with its team.

  • What if you leave out the third part?

SUMIF then adds up the cells it checked instead, which is only useful for numbers. Otherwise it works just like COUNTIF, with one extra part: the numbers to add up.
