Study notes

How SUMIFS works

  • What does SUMIFS do?

SUMIFS adds up the rows that match all of its conditions:

=SUMIFS(what to add up, where to look 1, what to match 1, where to look 2, what to match 2, ...)

  • What order do the parts go in?

    • The range to add up comes first. (In SUMIF it comes last, which is easy to mix up.)
    • Then come pairs: a range to check and what it must match. Add as many pairs as you need.
  • Which rows get added?

A row is only added if it matches every pair. With one pair, SUMIFS does the same as SUMIF, so many people use SUMIFS for everything.
