How WORKDAY works

  • What does WORKDAY do?

It finds the date a number of working days after a start date, skipping Saturdays, Sundays and any holidays you list:

    =WORKDAY(B2,C2,$F$2:$F$5)

  • Why not just add the days?

=B2+C2 counts every day, weekends included. Five working days from a Friday is the next Friday, but Friday plus 5 is Wednesday.

  • Does the start date count?

No. WORKDAY counts from the day after the start, like a delivery promise: one working day after Friday is Monday.

  • How do holidays work?

List the holiday dates in a range and give it as the third part. Lock it with $ so it stays put when you copy the formula down.

  • Can I count backwards?

Yes: a negative number of days goes back, e.g. =WORKDAY(B2,-3) for a date three working days before a deadline. WORKDAY.INTL lets you choose different weekend days.
