How RANK.EQ and RANK works
What does
RANK.EQdo?It gives a number's position in a list: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on.
=RANK.EQ(number, ref, [order]) Which way does it count?
Leave out the order, or use 0, and the highest number is 1st: right for points, sales or scores. Use 1 and the lowest number is 1st: right for race times, prices or golf scores.
What happens with a tie?
Tied numbers share a rank, and the next rank is skipped: two people on 2nd are followed by 4th, as in a sports league.
Why lock the list with $?
Every row must be ranked against the whole list. Without $, copying the formula down slides the list and leaves the top rows out.
What about
RANK?RANKis the older name and works the same way.RANK.AVGgives tied numbers the average of their positions instead.
